World Masters Round Up

Alastair Walker followed up Sunday’s 10,000m road race gold with bronze in today’s 5k at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Malaga.

Super Sammy clocked 17:36.08 to finish third behind Spanish winner Gregorio Saiz (17:32.38) and Alastair Prangnell (17:33.75) of New Zealand who finished second.

In his own words Sammy said: “I took it up but was outkicked.”

This hard earned bronze compliments the glorious gold he scooped in Sunday’s road race.

Also competing from the club was Colin Welsh. Colin raced in the 800m, V35 category. Colin cruised through Sunday’s heat in 2:01.69 and returned the next evening for his semi-final.

As expected the standard was high and Colin just missed out on the final by half-a-second, clocking 1:59.99, the 13th fastest time, with 12 to progress to the final.

Spaniard Juan Ramon Pous Perez, the victor in Colin’s semi-final,  would go on to finish first in Tuesday’s final. Compatriot Pablo Munoz Caballero would finish second and Great Britain and N.I.’s Aaron Brown would complete the podium with third.
