41 runners of various ages lined up on Saturday past for the 1st race of the season the Christie Cup. First off on their one lap route were the juniors. This was a first club race for a number of new club members including Denholm residents Corrie and Hector Patterson, Langholm girls Carly Blaikie and Lucy Ash, and Hawick’s Liam Jaffray younger brother of team member Katie Jaffray running in the same race, Sinead McHugh younger sister of James McHugh who was participating in the senior men’s race and also Jennie Sharp and Poppie Gibson. Taking the lead early on and maintaining it to the finish line in effortless style was newcomer Langholm lass Carly Blaikie in a time of 4.10, 2nd girl was Sophie Allott 4.18 and in 3rd place Lucy Ash 4.21. Fastest actual time Carly Blaikie.

For the boys 1st place honours went to Fraser Clyne who moved from the very back of the field to take victory in a time of 4.16, 2nd Lewis Renwick 4.24 and 3rd place – making it a family double in the top 3 – Sam Allott in 4.32. Fastest actual time Fraser Clyne.

Next off were the ladies and U15/17 boys/girls. A number of youngsters moved up to this category this year to join the ladies which saw 15 runners lining up for this 2 lap course. Joining the ladies on the slightly longer course were Jamie Waugh, Ishbel Inglis, Emma Grieve, Connie and Niamh Rafferty. In the ladies race Anne Renwick took the lead initially with team mate Donna Inglis just behind her until the final lap when a sprint finish for the line sealed victory for Donna Inglis in 8.19, 2nd Anne Renwick in 8.22 and 3rd place went to Sylvia Grieve in 9.05. Fastest actual time Pam Paxton. For the U15/17 boys it was another nailbiting finish. With Harry Marshall and Nathanael Jones running side by side the entire route both boys were given the same time 8.33 with Harry just getting over the line first. 3rd place went to Jamie Waugh in 9.29. Fastest actual time Harry Marshall.

Last race of the day was the senior men’s race covering 3 laps. There were 10 men in this race including Charlie Marshall moving up to senior level and new captain and returning member Scott Watson. Charlie went off first and managed to maintain his lead taking 1st place in 15.39, 2nd place went to Paul Lockie in 16.03 his first effort at the Christie Cup and in 3rd place James McHugh in 16.24.
