SCOTTISH CROSS COUNTRY NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015

Cold sleety snow and an icy wind greeted competitors on arrival at Callendar House, Falkirk where the Scottish Cross Country National Championships were being held on Sunday 22nd February. Conditions were so bad the officials’ tent was one of a number that blew away. There are reports of one tent hitting a runner as the wind lifted it off the ground. Regardless of weather conditions 2015 saw the highest number of entrants for 21 years.  Teviotdale Harriers had a small team competing and luckily a sturdy new tent that remained in position all day. The first race of the day was the u13 boys race covering a distance of 3,200m and Teviotdale had 3 boys competing. First home for the club was Fraser Clyne in a time of 12.51, position 58th, next Jai Patterson in 13.28, position 92nd then Johnlee Elder in 16.49, position 162nd. Overall winner of this race was Hamish Armitt of Giffnock North AAC who is currently a British record holder.

Next race for Teviotdale was the u15 girls event and the club had one runner. Ishbel Inglis completed her 4,000m event in 18.03, position 72nd. By this time conditions underfoot were soft and muddy to say the least. Giffnock North once again had overall winner in Erin Wallace currently SAIL 800m Scottish record holder.

Next to run was Pauline McAdam in the senior ladies 8,000m race. Pauline finished her 2 lap route in 44.01, position 206th. This race had a highly dramatic finish with Rosie Smith of HBT, who lead from early on, being beaten on the final straight by Australian student Maddie Murray currently a podiatory student and runner for Edinburgh AC.

Last away were the senior men on their 3 lap, 12,000m route.  There were almost 600 competitors in this race alone and it was an amazing sight to see the vast number of runners crest the hill.  Teviotdale had 5 competitors finishing as follows: Rory Anderson 44.51, position 92nd, Bruce Hughes 49.28, position 247th, Alan Inglis 51.23, position 315th, Alan Coltman 1:03:53, position 541st and Paul Lockie 1:09:45, position 565th. The senior men’s race had all eyes on 2 men as the ongoing battle between Callum Hawkins Kilbarchan AAC and Andrew Butchart Central AC for 1st place ensued. Andrew took the lead on the third lap and maintained it to finish champion 18 seconds ahead of Callum in a time of 38.06.

Scottish Masters XC Championships, Kilmarnock 31/1/15

medalv2Teviotdale Harriers old timers undertook the arduous cross country journey to Kilmarnock to compete in the Scottish Masters Cross Country Championships. The Masters is grass roots sport at its most enthusiastic, with the only pace-makers those implanted in the chests of the occasional die-hard enthusiast. The club had an excellent turnout of ten runners ably supported by seven travelling spectators. There can be few clubs that boasted runners born in the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s. The event is for athletes over forty with the over sixty five men running with the ladies. The attraction of master’s athletics is rebirth every five years, as you qualify for a new age group keeping you forever young.
The course had everything – a hill, a river, snow, mud, ice, sand, water and gravel making it an excellent varied course. Runners came from as far afield as Aberdeen and Highland Hill Runners to descend on the Ayrshire town. The sun shone for most of the day in stark contrast to the conditions at the Masters last year in Hawick described by Road Running and Cross Country secretary Alex Jackson as the ‘worst conditions I’ve ever known for a cross country’ as sub-zero wind-chill caused deep distress for many athletes in the Borders.
Ladies and older men run first over 6,000m and then the younger men go next over 8,000m.

First off were the ladies and over sixty five men covering two laps of the course (6000m). Lesley Chisholm of Garscube Harriers won the ladies race and Alex Sutherland of Highland Hill Runners won the mens race. Alan Samuel M65 was first home for the club and 12th man in a time of 33:05. Next home was Francis Cannon M65 and 18th man in a time of 35:26. Pauline McAdam F55 was first lady home for the club and 63rd lady overall in a time of 35:49. Next to finish was Donna Inglis W45 and 71st lady in a time of 38:55.

Paulinefrancisv2Jim Pittillo M80 was next finisher and 22nd man. Jim was second overall in the M80 category and collected the silver medal on the podium at the prize giving. Phyllis O’Brien, Hunters Bog Trotters climbed to the top of the podium to collect the F55 gold medal after being unable to do so last year when she spent the night in hospital after the race suffering from hypothermia in those appalling conditions at Hawick.

Jimpv2The younger men were next off and Keith Hood of Corstorphine AAC crossed the line first. Craig Grieve M40 was first home for the club in 63rd place in a time of 34:37. Alan inglis M45 was next home in 91st positon (35:52). Alastair Biggar M40 crossed the line next in 131st position (38:31) closely followed by Alex Corbett M45 in 143rd place (39:47). Club President Alan Coltman M45 finished in 169th place (44:43).
