East District League Race 3 – Broxburn

A sextet of hardy Harriers represented Teviotdale at the last East District Cross Country League race of the season at a wintry Broxburn on Saturday.

Due to various reasons only six runners could make the journey north to tackle the testing course, which included ‘Lungbuster Hill’ and an icy dip through a knee high burn.

First to take on a tricky 1.4km loop, competing in the under 11 girls was Ava Hughes.  Ava started steady before working her way into the race to finish a credible 42nd in a time of 7:51.

Next to run in the historic Harriers vest was Boyd Hughes in the under 11 boys.  Boyd was negotiating the same 1.4km loop as his sister before him.  Again starting steadily Boyd worked well through the 2nd half of the race to finish 64th recording a time of 8:05.

Harrison Hughes was next to run and was competing in the under 13 boys race.  Harrison faced a challenging 2.7km lap of the slippery course and built into it well.  Working hard to the end Harrison finished 50th In a time of 13:20.

With the temperature hitting a chilly -2, the snow began to fall in time for the final race of the day, the senior/junior men.  A field of 278 lined up to take on three laps of the frozen route totalling 8.1km.  Representing Hawick were club President Alan Coltman, Bruce Hughes and Greg Walker.  First home for Hawick and continuing his fine form was Greg Walker in 32:05 finishing 75th.  A quick finishing Bruce Hughes placed 91st with a time of 33:07 and a gutsy run from Alan Coltman placed him 266th clocking 44:20.

Next on the Harriers agenda is the Scottish Masters Cross Country Championships at Grant Park in Forres on Saturday 30th January.
