Runners Tackle Uphill Battle

1514 Uphill Mile – 9th May 2017

On a glorious Tuesday evening, 37 runners raced through the streets of Hawick in the annual Teviotdale Harriers 1514 Uphill Mile.

In the 27th running of the 1514 Club sponsored event, Rory Anderson, Lauren Corbett, Fraser Clyne and Lucy Ash emerged worthy winners in the various categories over the challenging route.

The relentless rise from the Moat Park Gates tests competitors with a continual climb of around 550 feet to the lung bursting summit at Crumhaughhill Farm.

As ever the current 1514 Club President was on hand to start proceedings on the Loan and then make the mile dash himself to be on hand to present the prizes.  President Mick Hogg, made the journey in record time but was later disqualified as it emerged he had received a lift.

On the starters gun Rory Anderson assumed his customary position and raced to the front.  Steven Beattie, Fraser Clyne and Greg Walker all followed on close behind as runners ascended the Loan before turning right at ‘The Auld Man’s Seat’ and then begin the climb of Crumhaughhill Road.

It’s was at this point where the race really took shape. This sapping stretch saw Rory open a slight but significant advantage as Steven and Fraser also moved further away from the fading Greg. Lauren, Fraser and Lucy were well on the way to victory in their respective races as gaps grew wider with every leg burning step.

Rory Anderson relentlessly raced to the top and for the third time in four years and claimed the Senior Men’s 1514 trophy in 6:38, with Steven Beattie (6:52) an impressive second and Scott Watson (7:28) completing the podium.

Lauren Corbett retained her Ladies title stopping the clock at 8:58. The always enthusiastic Ann Aitken took silver (10:42) with a determined Wendy Cross (11:51) earning bronze.

In the Junior Boys’ race a dominant Fraser Clyne also emerged victorious for the third time in four years. Fraser finished first boy in (6:54) but notably crossed the line third overall. Young Conan Harper (7:35) looked in great form finishing second with Ben Morozzo (7:48) not far behind taking bronze.

The Junior Girls’ gold was superbly won by Lucy Ash. Lucy also emerged first female overall running hard from start to finish in (8:44). Maisie Ballantyne (9:32) also ran well to take silver with Sophie Allott (9:51) a hard earned third.

The trophy presentations were made by 1514 Club President Mick Hogg and Mick couldn’t hide his admiration for all runners and paid tribute to the weather for playing its part. Mick also gave thanks to Tony and Ashley Reilly who had provided medals for all finishers.

Teviotdale Harriers would like to say a huge thanks to the 1514 Club for their continued support, Rob Halliday for organising and to all officials, marshals, photographers and the many supporters who lined the streets to cheer on the runners.

Harriers ladies are one short of a fantastic four

Eleven Harriers headed to Livingston on Sunday to take part in the sun-kissed National 6/4 Stage Road Relay Championships.

This top level event features two races, one for men and one for women, with both races setting off at the same time. Six runners for the men and four for the women would tackle alternate 3.1 and 5.8 mile laps around the streets of West Lothians largest town. Central AC would go on to scoop both golds.

For the first time since the men’s and women’s Relay Championships combined in 1998, Teviotdale were represented in the women’s event. Unfortunately the ladies couldn’t form a full team of four but the three who did run, ran with great determination and merited their small piece in Harriers history.

Once, twice, three times a lady.

Lauren Corbett ran the first 3.1 mile leg for the ladies and worked extremely hard to hand over in 28th position, in a time of 21:58. Michelle Short tackled the long 5.8 mile second leg and can be pleased with her performance registering 41:34 and lifting the team to 27th. Kirsty Hughes ran resolutely with a third leg time of 25:08, leaving the trio with a combined time of 1:28:40 and at that point a respectable 30th position out of 38 teams.

Michelle Short on leg two.

Competing for the third year in a row, the men were able to field eight runners. In the ‘A’ team, the short leg runners were Andy Goodair, Kyle Potts and Derek Scott with Greg Walker, Bruce Hughes and Alastair Walker the long. Andrew Gibson led out the ‘B’ team with Alan Coltman running second.

Andy Goodair ran 18:50 for the first leg and crossed in 45th position. Greg Walker ran a storming 33:19 to lift the team to 35th. Kyle Potts ran 20:32 to leave the team in 40th and Bruce Hughes over the second long leg had a time of 34:47 to bring them up to 36th. Derek Scott also gained places running a 19:13 leg to hand over to last runner Alastair Walker in 32nd. Alastair ran an experienced leg in 35:31 and picked up another position to place the team 31st out 57 overall, with a total time of 2:42:12.

Without being able to field a full ‘B’ team, Andrew Gibson still ran a competitive 21:04 and Alan Coltman played his part with a 45:02 long leg.

A Harriers spokesperson said: “With Teviotdale providing three officials for the day and a volunteer race marshal out on the course, the Harriers still continue to leave their mark on these National events.

It was great to see the Women represented today. Although they couldn’t get a full team, the fact that they were in the race is great progress. ”
