Menzies Race and Christmas Relays

Menzies Trophy Races and Christmas Relays

THERE was no festive wind down for Teviotdale Harriers last weekend with a busy two days of events – which saw the Menzies Races being run on the Saturday, and the popular Christmas relays on the Sunday. The Menzies had an excellent turnout of 44 runners.

In the under-13 athletes’ race on the Saturday, Lewis Renwick was first home in the handicap to win the boys’ race, second Hector Patterson, third Calum Renwick. Fastest actual time was Fraser Clyne. In the girls’ race, Lucy Ash was first home in the handicap. Carly Blaikie came home second with Sophie Allott just behind in third. Fastest actual time was Carly Blaikie.

In the under-17 boys’ race which is a sealed handicap with all runners set off together, Jamie Waugh romped home in first place. Joseph Tottman won the handicap race. In the senior ladies’ event, which took place over the same course as the under-17 boys and is also a sealed handicap, it was Ishbel Inglis who crossed the line first to claim victory. Last year she was pipped at the post in a photo finish with Catherine Mercer. In the handicap race Pauline McAdam was first, Anne Renwick second and Skye Patterson third.

The course for the senior men ran from the community hospital, round the ‘Joogily Brig’ and down to the finish at the high school, and the first home was Rory Anderson to win the Oliver Trophy. In the sealed handicap it was Cameron Scott who took custody of the Menzies Trophy; 2, Alan Inglis; 3, Scott Watson.

On the Sunday it was the Christmas relays – run over different distances around the park – and it attracted 42 runners. The following team were winners in a very tight finish – Derek “Degsy” Scott, Alex Corbett, Ishbel Inglis, Emma Grieve, Sophie Allott, Ava Hughes and Calum Renwick. All runners then retired to the clubrooms where everybody was awarded with a prize and the Christmas raffle was drawn.

The Harriers’ next event is the New Year’s Day run at 10.15am from outside the clubrooms, followed a few days later by the Langheugh Trophy races on January 3 (registration 12.15pm at the park cafe with first race 1pm).
