Hawick Cycling Club and Teviotdale Harriers held a duathlon on Hawick Moor on Wednesday 28 December, the course comprised of running one lap of the racecourse, followed by cycling 3 laps (one lap for the youths) of the perimeter of the moor including a climb up onto the hill, along the top dyke and back down towards the starting area, finishing with running one lap of the racecourse.
The weather couldn’t have been worse with a wind that rocked the stationary cars and the rain/sleet coming on just before the race got under starters orders. Twenty hardy souls took part including three youths in what ended up in a muddy quagmire with everyone finishing within the hour. The Harriers ruled the day with Davie Cavers finishing in first place in an impressive time of 36 minutes, closely followed by Craig Grieve in the time of 36 minutes 13 and ex harrier Colin Paxton finishing in third place in a time of 39 minutes 11.
A very impressive effort in the youth section for both girls taking part with Ishbel Inglis finishing in 30 minutes and Emma Grieve in 31 minutes 44 – for a first attempt at a duathlon these girls could well be ones to watch in the future.
Everyone agreed that it had been a thoroughly enjoyable event as it was all for fun!
Everyone retired to the Border Club for a raffle followed by a dominoes tournament. Entry fees and raffle money were donated to the Murray family.
