Five hardy harriers took the long drive north to Aberdeen on Saturday 3rd December for the East District Cross Country Championships. Held at Aberdeen University’s Balgownie Playing Fields, first impressions suggested a flat course but concealed within the surrounding woodlands were a couple of long steep climbs. Early on, two deer disturbed by all the activity made an unexpected appearance across the far side of the course which was a bit of a surprise for spectators.

First to run on his 2 short laps 4,000m course was Fraser Clyne. As was the case all day, the race took off at a very fast pace but Fraser finished well in 16th place with a time of 14.37.

Next away was Ishbel Inglis on her one short and one long lap 4,900m course which she completed in 23.04, position 31st.

Running in the senior mens’ race were Scott Watson, Alan Inglis and Alan Coltman, covering a distance of 9,700m on their 3 long lap course. Host club Metro Aberdeen were out in force for this event and drew lots of attention when over 45 of them formed in a circle for a group hug and team shout. Impressive. Again the pace was fast from the word go. Scott Watson was first to finish for the club in 36.34, 82nd position, next was Alan Inglis in 39.03, 130th position and 45th position in the masters (over 40) category, then Alan Coltman in 48.52, 185th position, 88th in masters category.
